Anamorphosis is a kind of mathematic perspective studied by European artists and intellectuals from the 16th century to the 17th century when the final method was published. The mysterious aura which characterised this system was replaced by its regard as mere entertainment due to its popularization in the 18th century, when it reached a great widespread among the population in cabinets of curiosities and Kunst-und Wunderkammeern. However, anamorphosis is still being studied and applied to contemporary art projects. This article focuses on the different technical and conceptual possibilities of its application through a wide range of current artists who demonstrate that this kind of images still have much to offer to the field of artistic creation: Catoptric and optical anamorphosis become real in sculpture, photography and painting of street artists as well as those related to art galleries. With this study we deduce that the application of this system to contemporary art links these works to questions about the veracity of visual perception, a key that enables us to create critical judgments regarding the contemporary mass media to which we are constantly exposed.
