This article discusses the intrinsic characteristics of interactive media, focusing on cultural dissemination applications and personal interaction environments such as multimedia computers with a pointer device (e.g., a mouse or tactile screen), a category that would include e-readers. The theoretical discussion will build on the history of the cultural CD-ROMs developed during the 1990s. The conclusions of this study may open useful new ways of analyzing and developing applications for cultural dissemination that will take full advantage of the characteristics of future generations of e-readers
