Resumen

Contemporary art is often difficult to appreciate and understand. The goal of this study was to determine how younger (<25) and older (>60) adults make sense of contemporary art. Four artworks were viewed in two settings: lab and museum. Participants in each age group were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 viewed artworks 1-2 without labels/discussion and 3-4 with labels/discussion (in both settings); Group 2 viewed artworks 1-2 with labels/discussion and 3-4 without labels/discussion (in both settings). After completing both sessions, participants were asked how much labels and discussions affected their understanding, liking, and enjoyment. Analyses of the responses as well as the discussion content revealed that both groups found labels and discussion helpful. However, the younger group felt that labels and discussion when in the museum setting contributed significantly more to liking than did the older group.
