On art and computing: an introduction to digital art

Main Article Content

Pau Alsina

This article summarises the history of intersections between art and computing, offering an overview of digital art in terms of the different digital technologies used in its creation. In this way, the key concepts and most important examples of artistic practices are introduced to show the intersections between the arts and software, internet, virtual reality, artificial intelligence or artificial life; these being seen to be some of the most important computing technologies and areas of study to have generated interesting hybrids in the field of the arts. The idea is not to try and create a categorisation for digital art based on the technologies used, but rather to show some of the most important areas of activity so as to allow for the future development of more specific research that looks at the relations between the history of digital art, current developments and the subjects arising in contemporary culture.
