This paper explores the impact of the digital era on the university as an institution and in the working life of academic professionals employed there. Based on existing research, the paper sets out to analyse the nature of the participative web, the shifting landscape of ICTs and knowledge generation, the emerging research needs posed by today’s technology and society, and the basic features of this new technosocial environment in relation to today’s emerging academic models. The paper proposes a practical technology-enhanced research model underpinned by a model of professional ethics, which is put forward as an alternative in times of tensions and contradictions in the academy.
