This article presents some of the characteristic features of Extractiones de
Talmud, the Latin translation of the Talmud, which was carried out in Paris in
around 1244-1245.
Significant due to being the first large-scale translation of the Talmud, Extractiones
de Talmud is a highly thorough but incomplete rendering. Consisting of selected
passages of the Talmud, it was undertaken for a theological purpose and with
the intention of refuting Judaism.
Following a brief overview of the context in which the translation was performed,
the text is described and some examples are discussed with a view to appraising
the quality of the translation.
