Twitter, which started defining itself as “ a service that allows people to communicate with each other by exchanging short messages”, nowadays is the third most popular social network, preceded only by Facebook and MySpace. The aim of this paper is to analyze the potential of this tool in the academic world for educational purposes. The start point has been a query to 250 students about their employ of social networks. Then, some innovative initiatives already implemented in higher education have being analyzed, to study the advantages and disadvantages of this communication tool.
