Abstract

For a number of years now sport has been widely regarded as an educational tool in the service of society, during which time different kinds and quantities of resources have been devoted to
bringing together sport and education, accompanied by different expectations as to the results that this should achieve. There is increasing use of the term ‘formative sport’, and the concept is
central to a number of assumptions that need to be clarified. This article seeks to evaluate the current state of sporting activities for children and young people in Catalonia and, in particular, to
analyze the role played by competition in these activities.
