As of 1962, there was an increase of translations of foreign literature into Catalan, still under censorship, and a disagreement arose regarding the style of literary translations: there were those in favor of continuing with the model of Noucentisme and those who considered it obsolete and, in some contexts, useless. Josep Vallverdú was one of the translators who aimed to bring texts to a wide audience using a genuine and credible Catalan which was appropriate for written literature. The first part of this study puts Vallverdú’s translations for La Cua de Palla series in context, and the second part puts the focus on the descriptive analysis of his translation of the so-called “mal parlar” (“bad language”), and on observing some alternations that reveal a period of stylistic transition, in which translation had to cope with great difficulties. The analyzed translations are Una besada abans de morir, La gran dormida and El ritual de la sang.
