In this work we present an analysis of the translation of German discourse particles that act as confirmatory interrogatives nicht wahr?, was —and the Berlin variant wa?—, hm?, oder?, as well as the conversational marker na ja, present in Timur Vermes’ novel Er ist wieder da [Look who is back], published in 2012 and an immediate bestseller. Specifically, we analyze the translations into Catalan, Spanish, Italian, and French to determine the level of convergence and divergence among the solutions chosen in each of the studied languages. The results indicate a different pattern between Catalan, Spanish, and Italian on one side, and French on the other, which shows a highly diversified treatment in conveying the pragmatic nuances of the studied particles.
