Adult schools, as they are conceived today, grew out of the context of the people's movement in the last stages of Francoism, as a response by the movement itself to the low levels of instruction suffered by the masses, but also as a cultural instrument with more far-reaching objectives. Throughout these years, with enormous difficulty and tension, the Government has incorporated this reality as one more educational level. The article describes this process based on the analysis of the different bodies that have been set up in the schools up until today. The comparison between past and present serves to posit the basic dilemma underIying anyapproach to ongoing adult education: Can the Government assume a movement of this nature without distorting ii?
