Squeaky/Pain: articular l’experiència sentida del dolor per al disseny d’interaccions somaestètiques

Aquest article il·lustrat mostra les eines metodològiques per articular l’experiència sentida del dolor crònic que s’utilitzen en el disseny d’interaccions somaestètiques. Per això presenta el procés de disseny d’un estudi de cas denominat Squeaky/Pain, una extensió del soma l’objectiu de la qual és augmentar la consciència somaestètica del dolor implícita en l’apreciació de sensacions tant agradables com molestes. L’extensió del soma és un dispositiu portable interactiu que proporciona una interacció so-moviment per reproduir l’experiència de dolor de l’usuari, des del patiment fins a l’alleujament. L’estudi se centra en un aspecte poc explorat de les interaccions somaestètiques: el mesurament d’experiències pertorbadores per a l’apreciació de la consciència sensorial. Amb l’extensió del soma que transmet experiències pertorbadores, l’estudi vol millorar el coneixement somàtic de les persones i, per tant, de les seves vides. El procés de disseny de Squeaky/Pain requereix testimonis detallats d’experiències corporals viscudes per crear interaccions somaestètiques. Per accedir a una narrativa detallada de les experiències sentides es van utilitzar diverses eines per tal d’articular l’experiència de dolor en primera i segona persona per utilitzar-la en el disseny. Són diferents tipus de mapes corporals, anàlisis de vídeos, estudis de materials i formes, diaris, entrevistes en profunditat i autoentrevistes. Les fases d’ideació i prova han demostrat que aquestes eines es complementen entre si per accedir als multifacètics aspectes de les experiències sentides. En aquest article il·lustrat mostrem com es poden aplicar les eines visuals, verbals i escrites per revelar experiències corporals implícites amb la finalitat de conformar el disseny d’interaccions somaestètiques.

L’Arife Dila Demir és estudiant de doctorat a l’Estonian Academy of Arts, on ha obtingut un màster en Disseny Tèxtil. La seva investigació se centra en el disseny somàtic, la somaestètica, l’estètica de la relació corporal, les interaccions basades en el moviment, els tèxtils interactius i el disseny crític i especulatiu. Demir ha treballat com a professora adjunta a l’Estonian Academy of Arts (tardor de 2019). També ha treballat com a dissenyadora de vestuari de tèxtils electrònics en un projecte realitzat conjuntament per un artista i la Tallinn University, finançat per la residència Vertigo STARTS (2019-2020). A més, ha participat com a artista i investigadora en el programa de residències STARTS.EE realitzat pel grup HCI de la Tallinn University en col·laboració amb elektron.art. Kristi Kuusk, Estonian Academy of Arts
La Kristi Kuusk és professora adjunta i principal al Grup d’Investigació en Disseny de l’Estonian Academy of Arts. S’interessa en la recerca de futurs alternatius per al disseny de vestuari i tèxtils amb l’aplicació de tecnologia. Combina la pràctica (ha estat seleccionada per col·laborar en dos projectes de la UE: STARTS Residencies i WORTH Partnership Project) amb la presentació i publicació d’investigacions en fòrums internacionals. Les seves últimes publicacions inclouen: “A transdisciplinary collaborative journey leading to sensorial clothing” a CoDesign - International Journal of CoCreation in Design and the Arts (2020) i “Altering One’s Body-perception Through E-Textiles and Haptic Metaphors” a Frontiers in Robotics and AI (2020).
Nithikul Nimkulrat, OCAD University
La Nithikul Nimkulrat és professora adjunta i presidenta en funcions del programa Material Art & Design de la OCAD University del Canadà. Abans del seu nomenament va treballar a l’Estonian Academy of Arts (2013-2018), la Loughborough University (Regne Unit, 2011-2013) i l’Aalto University (Finlàndia, 2004-2010), on va obtenir el doctorat en Disseny el 2009.
