This article gives a glimpse into the different ways that Mark, Matthew andLuke comment, in the style of a midrash, on the Song of the Vineyard, usingthe new Gospel Synopsis, which compares the text of two of the oldest uncialmanuscripts, Codex Bezae (D05) and Codex Vaticanus (B03). In addition, account has been taken of the Gospel of Thomas. Among the many variantreadings, two stand out: the question put to Jesus by the Jewish leaders, which is the prompt for the parable, consists in a single question according toMark-Bezae: ‘With what authority do you do this?’, whereas in Mark-Vaticanus,Matthew and Luke, a second question is added. In fact, Jesus limits hisanswer to the first question. Another interesting variant is seen in the seriesof actions: either, ‘they will kill him and drag him out of the vineyard’ (Markand Matthew-Bezae), thus excluding him definitively from Israel; or, ‘they willdrag him out of the vineyard and kill him’ (Mark-Vaticanus and Luke), whichis the more logical order but less clear-cut. Luke underlines the presence of the‘whole people’ in the discussion, whereas Mark and Matthew simply assumethat the ‘crowds/crowd’ (Mark-Vaticanus and Matthew) or ‘the people’ (Mark-Bezae) were present by the fear that they instil in the leaders
