In this paper we present how the teaching strategy in the groups for intensified study (GEI) has been improved in the academic course 2012-1013. These groups have been introduced in the Facultat d’Economia i Empresa at the Universitat de Barcelona with the aim that students that fail to pass Mathematical Economics I in their first attempt can more easily prepare themselves to pass the subject, while following the subjects corresponding to the second term that they are facing for the first time. This teaching strategy was first introduced in the academic year 2011-2012 and now some changes have been made to overcome the observed inefficiencies or shortcomings. We focus on the course of Mathematical Economics I from the Bachelor in Economics, to assess how these changes have an impact on the academic performance in comparison with the first year results.
