Dialect’s translation always means to start a very risky venture. It is furthermore true when the original text presents a colourful mixture of linguistic varieties, compounded with the aim to be the voice of a particular social and cultural reality. This is the case of Andrea Camilleri’s novels, the representation of the complex linguistic situation in Italy. To translate a novel with such a peculiar language means to make a linguistic and ideological choice, which will depend on the norms and the socio-linguistic context of target text and its polisystem. The translation comparative analysis of Il birraio di Preston into Spanish and Catalan shows that the translators put into practice two opposite strategies, which means two opposite linguistic and cultural target contexts.
