La recepción del Evangelio de Marcos a lo largo de la historia ha sido paradójica. Su temprana vinculación a la figura de Pedro y a Roma no fueron suficientes para que ocupara un lugar destacado en las épocas patrística y medieval. Los estudios y comentarios realizados sobre esta obra desde Jerónimo hasta Erasmo son escasos pero significativos. Por otro lado, en la recepción del Evangelio de Marcos durante este período, la figura de san Jerónimo tendrá gran importancia. No solo es uno de los pocos Padres de la Iglesia que prestó atención a este Evangelio, sino que, además, estudios posteriores a él serán difundidos asociados a su nombre.
