The metaphor of the lover and the beloved is emblematic of Ramon Llull’s work. In the Book of the lover and the beloved, this metaphor is set in a fictional narrative through which Llull presents an ars contemplativa by example. This paper puts forward a reading of that narrative,
dwelling in particular in its literary value as a tool for contemplation.
