Domènec Guansé, one of the most influential drama critics of the inter-war years, followed very closely the development of the Catalan stage between 1931 and 1936. To the critical evaluation of each theatrical season he added a proposal for the creation of a National Theatre under the official aegis of the Generalitat de Catalunya aiming at the promotion of an ambitious dramatic literature, as exemplified by Carles Soldevila or Josep Maria de Sagarra at his best, to go alongside a quality commercial theatre. The ultimate goal was the broadening and diversification of the theatre-going public
