Analysis of multimedia interactive SaaS apps for the creation of Open Educational Resources in the context of Open Education

The rise of interactive multimedia content creation apps sustained in Software as a Service (SaaS) model offers a wide range of possibilities for multimedia developers. This technological and business model makes these tools very affordable, making them the best alternative for the creation of open educational resources (OER). This article analyzes multimedia creation applications (Atavist, Piktochart, Tiki-toki, Genially and Thinglink) assessing aspects of accessibility, usability and portability. It also provides examples of OER in these formats. The main conclusion indicates the importance of the multimedia designer for the elaboration of multimedia educational content. Also how to incorporate a multimedia designer defines a new methodology of production of higher quality. Its function facilitates the process of adapting instructional design and materials created by teachers and optimizes the creation ofOERs and their use, through virtual platforms, by students.

Juan Romero Luis, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid

In 2017 Romero-Luis gets a grant which allows him to investigate at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in the Science of Communication department. This happens after two years gaining experience as a User Experience Designer and Multimedia Creative Writer. He works as a freelance for several companies including the URJC Center for Innovation in Digital Education. In 2014 he finishes a double degree in Audiovisual Communication and Journalism at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid. Thanks to a grant, in 2013 he can study an academic year at the Università degli studi di Roma Tre in Italy. In 2008 he completes an associate degree for Image and after years of gaining experience, he earns a Masters’ in graphic design at Aula Creactiva in 2011.

Manuel Gértrudix Barrio, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid

Associate Professor of Digital Communication at the Rey Juan Carlos University, coordinator of the Cyberimaginary research group, and co-editor of the scientific journal Icono14. Specialist in digital communication and elearning he has participated in more than fifteen competitive national and international research projects. He has an extensive scientific production with more than 45 publications among research articles, book chapters and monographs.

He has been Academic Director of the Center for Innovation in Digital Education of the URJC (2013-2017), Technical Advisor of New Technologies (2003-2007) and Head of Service of distance education of the MEC. He has taught at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1999-2002), Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (1999-2003) and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (2003-2007). He has realisazed stays of research in the USA at the University of Central Florida and in Scotland at the University of Stirling. He has taught courses in Argentina at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Colombia, at the Universidad del Norte, and at the UDESC in Brazil.
