Innovation and Society for Newspaper Design Awards in Visual Journalism in Spain and the United States in the 1990s. A Quantitative Methodological Proposal
Article Sidebar
Main Article Content
The 1990s widely opened the newsroom doors to the newspaper designer by including their direct participation in the development of news presentation. Artists and designers from fine arts and design schools were actively integrated into the workflow, tasked with planning, creating, and executing journalistic content amidst an era rich in computerized technological advancements, dedicated to enhancing visual communication. The Society for Newspaper Design (SND) played an instrumental role in bridging the experiences of the international press, fostering a competitive landscape through its yearly contests that rewarded outstanding design achievements. Based on the study of the winning works published in the SND yearbooks, this article proposes a quantitative methodology to analyze the development of visual journalism in this decade both in the United States and Spain. This tool allows us to identify and measure the parameters of change in visual innovation, offering insights into the transformative impact of design on journalism.
