The article criticizes the commonplace, frequent in bibliography, in which Maragall must be considered the author who first presents Nietzsche to Catalan and Spanish readers. Maragall’s article on Nietzsche (1893) is certainly the first article devoted to the German philosopher in Catalan, but before this article, Nietzsche’s name had already been mentioned in Wagnerian circles as early as 1878, and also, separate from Nietzsche’s writings on Wagner, by several modernist intellectuals beginning in late 1892. In Spain, Nietzsche’s reception differed substantially from that in Barcelona, and includes articles on the German philosopher as early as 1892, prior to Maragall’s first study.
