In this paper, we study the residual extreme apocope in medieval Galician texts in
the context of the development of unstressed vowels in word-final position in this language.
Following the line of thought initiated by García de Diego in 1909, later developed
in works published in the 1980's, it has consistently been said that the so called
extreme apocope was a rare phenomenon in Medieval Galician, with the exception of
the type that supposedly appeared in certain texts, most of them translations of prose
works of the 14th century. Through the exhaustive scrutiny that these cases have been
subjected to in our work, we wish to show that this reservation is not justified and that it
can be stated beyond any doubt that Medieval Galician was almost completely unaffected
by this linguistic innovation.
