This paper analyses the presence of political and educational utopias in history teachers’ training in eight PhD theses from Barcelona universities (Catalunya – Spain). The analysis attempts, first, to offer an overview of the PhD thesis and, second, to investigate the ways in which political and educational utopias are –or are not– mobilized to give some meaning to teacher education. Political and educational utopias are understood as accomplishable projects for a better world based on criticism of the present day that can be accomplished by the work of teachers. The analysis supports the importance of understanding the presence of the political and educational utopias in history teachers’ training, since the teachers’ perspectives on the profession are related to their political meanings and influence their history didactics beliefs
