Abstract:

Bullfighting, precedents in Barcelona

The bulls' fiesta in Barcelona was an avocation created among civilians in 1802, when King Charles IV visited the city and the first wooden plaza (bullring) was built dedicated to the fiesta in Barceloneta. The testimonies collected allow to hypothesize that before this date the fiesta was not part of the Barcelona’s tradition, although it was known through art as ceramics, Chinese shadows or horse performances that came to town, and sporadic performances too. History said that King Joan I closed the King Square for an entertainment of bulls in medieval times, however we believe it was an isolated incident of the fiesta rooted in the Spanish tradition, as other spectacles without a fixed location, which are related in this study.
