This research should be considered as a pioneering work that opens new perspectives on equal opportunity for active ageing through the use of Information and Communications Technology. Its goals are: a) To evaluate the level of media competence in the technology dimension of people aged 65 or older in a sample from Spain and in another simple from the La Rioja autonomous region of Spain; b) To find out whether there exist significant differences in the level of media competence in the technology dimension of people aged 65 or older with respect to the gender variable in the sample from Spain and in the sample from La Rioja; c) To discover whether there are significant differences in the level of media competence in the technology dimension of people aged 65 or older depending on the qualifications (no formal qualifications, primary education, secondary education, and university education) of the interviewed individuals, both from the sample of Spain and from the sample of the La Rioja autonomous region of Spain. A valid and reliable questionnaire on Audiovisual Communication has been designed by experts on the field (Ferrés, J. et al, 2011). The sample used in this research consists of 919 adults aged 65 or older from Spain, and 90 adults aged 65 or older from the La Rioja autonomous region. The quantitative analysis of the data allows us to come to the conclusion that no significant differences exist in the level of media competence in the technology dimension of people aged 65 or older between the results obtained from the sample of the La Rioja autonomous region of Spain and the results obtained from the simple including people from all the autonomous regions of Spain.
