Ilsa Barea, la forja de una traductora

Activist, writer, translator… The role of Arturo Barea's wife was much more significant than is generally known. Ilsa Barea translated her husband's most famous work, the trilogy The Forge of a Rebel, from Spanish into English and, later, in the absence of original manuscripts, from English into Spanish. This language swapping has led some authors to question whether or not she herself wrote part of the trilogy. Isla Barea served as a link between the Anglo-Saxon publishing market and the writers of the Republican exile of 1939. However, little is known about her. The Barea family's correspondence with authors such as Max Aub, Ramón J. Sender, Francisco Ayala and Guillermo de la Torre (also a publisher), has allowed me to begin studying the work of this unknown author and translator.
