The present article aims to propose a new approach to the treatment of polysemy in Spanish as a foreign language for Chinese students, taking into consideration not only the multiple senses of a lexical element but also the existing relations between them, according to the theories of lexical semantics. The article is based on an examination of the samples extracted from the method currently in use in China, and illustrates the new approach through analysis of the associations between different senses of each polysemic word studied, applying theories of lexical semantics, especially the theory of generative lexicon and that of cognitive linguistics
