Montaigne is the first modern thinker who, in one way or another, influenced the complex identity or the contemporary intellectual present in the media today. This figure moves between the controversial and the insolent, that is, the investigation at inconvenient questions. The relations of the intellectual with the power structure are various and dynamic, but the media tend to caricature them and to blur their role as compared to other discourses with which they overlap. In reality, that which makes the intellectual with a public role unique -when not subordinated to his or her original role- is the capacity to recognize the value c[words, and his or herintrinsically frontier-crossing nature, which permits him or her to have, at the same time, an experience and a critical distance [rom that experience.
