Elvira Mancuso (1867-1958 is a part of the ever-interesting group made up of Sicilian female writers who have hardly been studied hitherto. Nonetheless, Mancuso was an intellectual, mainly involved in topics such as female education, which she considered to be the only means to professional and sentimental emancipation, as shown in this brief essay. In her study, with support in her own vital experience, she underpins the ideas exposed in her novel Vecchia storia…inverosimile (1906) that was coldly received by the critics. This polemical essay, together with her own personal choices, make her become an ante litteram feminist because of her interest in defending gender equality and her critique to the desolate panorama in which Sicilian females´ condition were found at the time.
