Sport, education and values: a humanist proposal

This paper presents an initial general reflection on the educational potential of sport, on the basis of its humanistic values. We explore some of the educational virtues of the sports factor, with a particular emphasis on psychosocial and axiological aspects. Our starting point is the conviction that sports practice can transmit a set of key values in the process of personal development, on our path towards moral fulfilment. Consequently, we must not ignore sports and physical education in our efforts to improve our society. We also propose that physical education teachers and trainers should adopt an educational role that is based on moral and social values.
