One aspect of the material culture of schools and of the history of education, in its most general conception, is related to play activities. These have always formed a part of educational spaces. Consequently, games and related materials should be carefully considered in any educational project of a museographic or heritage nature. In this paper, we study the function of these materials in educational museums, and in projects and activities related to historical educational heritage. We briefly summarize the place that games have played in these institutions and educational experiences. Finally, we establish a taxonomy or typology to classify play that may serve to unify criteria and establish guidelines for recovering, studying and disseminating these elements more effectively.
