This article forms part of a research project about the disciplinary and institutional construction of educational theory; this project is being conducted by a group of lecturers in educational theory and the history of education from Madrid’s Complutense University, within the framework of the current review of university awards being undertaken as part of the process of adaptation to the European Higher Education Space. The paper focuses on three events or specific moments within this history and ends by drawing a set of conclusions, based on educational theory, regarding the immediate future of the discipline.
