The basis for this paper is the problem relating art to language. If the expressive aspect is emphasised, there will be an evident deficit in communication. If the representative and pragmatic aspects are emphasised, communication will lack the potential art has of transmitting the most intimate aspect. This dichotomy represents a problem for the artistic gaze, which today constitutes an important object of artistic creation, and which we compare here with the tale of Alice in Wonderland. Such a situation leads to great consequences for artistic education, since this will reach the point where communication is possible. We resolve this dichotomy by incorporating intersubjectivity into the gaze. Subjective experience searches for its form through words suggested to us by an intersubjective and social other (what we term reflexive silence). We shall also take a look at the possibilities of language in understanding the ambivalence of art without confining it to rigid thought categories, opening it up to the dissent and divergence that must characterise artistic aspects, but without dismissing communication. We shall see that far from being a limiting factor, these problems constitute a great enrichment for art, incorporating an insuffi ciently studied dimension of the artistic opening.
