Designing From the Perspective of Care, or How to Repair the World

The aim of this article is to explore the possibility of designing from the perspective of care. The article addresses the concept of care throughout the history of design for well-being. The text illustrates the principal concepts of the ethics of care and applies them to the philosophy of design. Vulnerability is considered an indispensable moral position to design from care, and narration is considered a design method from the care philosophy point of view. In addition, the article offers examples of designers with a conception consistent with the ethics of care. Through various examples of designers, this article discusses what it would mean to think from the perspective of care in the field of design.

Anna Pujadas, EINA University School of Design and Art of Barcelona (UAB)

Anna Pujadas is a graphic designer with a background in digital creation. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History (1990), a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy (1992), a PhD in Art History (1998) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and a UOC EHEA Official Master: University Master’s Degree in eLearning (2020). She is accredited as an Adjunct Professor by the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU, 2017) and as a Full Professor by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, 2017). She is currently researching Postdigital Design: how the digital revolution has changed design processes (Makers Culture, Fablabs, DIY, Crafts Revival, self-printing, post-production, etc.).
