Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht
Professor H. H. Eggebrecht presents us with a profound interpretation of the complexity of J. S. Bach’s Matthäuspassion, based on a musical, theological and artistic analysis of the piece. The main focus points of his argument are based on the aesthetic quality of the work, its power of abstraction, consideration of the object-Passion as the core of the Christian faith, and the distance in artistic interpretation. To support the analysis are the 12 fourvoiced choruses, the complex aria-recitative, the role of the ariosi, the meaning of Picander’s poems, research into pietism and theology of his time, and the power of aestheticism as a means of recovery. Throughout the text numerous examples of the Bach score appear, which are essential to understand his erudite and astute way of thinking.
