Entre l’etnolingüística i la pragmàtica: compliments entre emigrants sards de Biella

Aquest article analitza un corpus de compliments entre emigrants sards de primera generació de Biella, amb una mitjana d’edat de 75 anys. Els informants van triar de manera majoritària les mateixes respostes, seguint patrons conversacionals concrets i actuant com a "jugadors d’un joc ritual" (Goffman, 1967). El seu comportament respecta el model de cortesia del “Contracte Social de Valors” (Mursy i Wilson, 2001) estipulat entre els individus i la societat, segons el qual el compliment respon al Principi de Generositat sancionat per les normes socials: a una oferta de menjar es respon amb un compliment, i al compliment amb una nova oferta de menjar. Els compliments no es rebutgen mai, però en alguns casos cal ignorar-los, quan toquen temes tabú com ara els nens petits o el menjar que s'està preparant, sobre els quals es podria projectar un mal d'ull. Adreçar un compliment sobre aquests temes és una manca de respecte i una violació del Contracte Social de Valors, per a la qual no hi ha remei possible a nivell conversacional.
