L'article se centra en un pròleg gairebé desconegut escrit per William Carlos Williams als sonets dialectals de Giuseppe Gioachino Belli traduïts per Harold Norse a finals dels anys cinquanta. En el breu assaig, aquí traduït per primera vegada a l'italià, el poeta nord-americà reafirma amb contundència el seu realisme basat en l'ús de l'idioma americà, una llengua considerada diferent de l'anglès que es parla al Regne Unit, i el valor literari del qual es compara amb l'aconseguit per Belli en escriure els seus sonets en dialecte.
