Abstract:
This paper addresses the different aspects involved in the definition of pain. On the one hand, it explores the historical background of the term rooted in medicine, as well as the view of pain as an adaptive experience but also as a therapeutic challenge. The definition of pain by the International Association for the Study of Pain - IASP (2020) is highlighted. Finally, from a biopsychosocial approach to pain, the dangers and weaknesses of the biomedical model in the approach to persistent (chronic) pain are highlighted.
