Among the many symbolic images of royalty, generated by emblems, hieroglyphics, poems and paintings during the baroque culture -the lion, the eagle, etc.-, that which reached a highest development, becoming the image par excellence of the King, was the sun. This astral metaphor was complemented by the identification of the queen with the moon, resource commonly used by poets, thinkers and court artists to exalt the monarch’s companion. This article analyses some examples of the lunar metaphor applied to Spanish queens of the house of Austria.
