Library of Congress Classification in the Universitat Pompeu Fabra Library

This article is and exposition about how, when and why the Universitat Pompeu FabraLibrary chose the Library of Congress Classification (LCC). First, the requirements for a classification system that this library presented are explained and it is shown how the LCC fulfillesthem. Next, a brief description of the generalstructure and the notation of the classification isgiven. Then, some aspects of its application tothe UPF bibliographic collection are described.Finally, an approximation to .the classificationfrom the end user's eminently practical point ofview is offered.
