The concept of Sprachbund in linguistics not only reveals the close contact between neighbouring languages, but also reflects the historical and geographical dynamics of the area where this phenomenon is found. Although the most famous Sprachbünde are the Balkans and south-east Asia, the relevant bibliography has not paid much attention to the creation and development of a small Sprachbund in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula which has had an influence as far afield as in America. In this article, I attempt to account for the birth of the area of convergence of western Andalusian and southern European Portuguese, while explaining its subsequent development and the historical and geographical factors that allows for putting forth its existence.
