From January to September 1939, challenges accumulate for the French colony in Barcelona. Confronted with the social crisis affecting its members, the colony strengthens its solidarity system. With Pétain appointed as the French ambassador to Spain, diplomatic relations are established on the principle of «collaboration,» which questions the raison d’être of the colony and reinforces its ineffectiveness. Its reorganization, already initiated, is disrupted by the mobilization of August-September 1939. In this context, the director of the Jacques Langlade Institute attempts to prevent his replacement by Pierre Deffontaines.
