This text was not originally written by the undersigned,
but it is an adaptation of Polish poet and essayist Adam Zagajewski’s "Writing in Polish," included in the volume In Defence of Fervour, published by Acantilado in 2005, to our circumstances. This experiment was decidedly guided by the extraordinary parallelism between the Polish and Catalan cases, between the ups and downs of Polish and Catalan, and their respective literatures; a parallelism intensified, among other things, by the pejorative epithet “Pole” that Spanishspeaking, not particularly educated, citizens usually use to refer to
their Catalan contemporaries that dare to express in their mother tongue to speak to each other in their presence.
