Desde temprano en el desarrollo del budismo indio, la veneración a los ‘Budas del pasado’ desempeñó un papel crucial en la promoción de la universalidad del Dharma y en la exaltación del Buda histórico. Los practicantes budistas veneraron al Buda y a sus predecesores como la encarnación viviente del Dharma. La promesa futura de la llegada de Maitreya se vinculó a este contexto narrativo para legitimarlo como el sucesor en el linaje de los Budas. A pesar del gran número de estudios que analizan el fenómeno religioso de Maitreya, el hecho de que se lo describa como Monarca Universal (cakravartin) y Conquistador (jina), y esto sin la necesidad de combatir siquiera literariamente, supone un desafío traductológico aún no explorado.

EFRAIN VILLAMOR HERRERO, Universidad de Teikyo

Licenciado en filología japonesa (2016) y Doctor en Estudios de Asia Oriental (Universidad de Salamanca (2023), es especialista en Asia Oriental y Estudios Budistas, residente en Japón desde 2011. En la actualidad es profesor titular de la Universidad Teikyo (Japón). Su principal interés académico es la relación del budismo con la ideología védica, el pensamiento del brahmanismo antiguo, así como la influencia de la filosofía india en el pensamiento japonés. Ha impartido cursos de formación en Casa Asia y sido profesor en diferentes universidades japonesas y españolas. Miembro activo de la Asociación de Estudios Japoneses de España y del Grupo de Investigación Reconocido, EURASIA Humanismo (USAL), así como de la Society for the Study of Pali and Buddhist Culture y Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies, entre otras asociaciones internacionales.
