The objective of this paper is to detail the advantages that the electronic corpus of Colonial Mexican Spanish (COREECOM) offers when incorporating diastratic and diaphasic differences. If a corpus is held to be a model of a linguistic reality, it must collect samples not only of diachronic and diatopic differences, but also of the social and textual variations of the linguistic community in question. Given the importance of such parameters and their internal diversity, we have deemed it necessary to subdivide them. The diastratic level is made up of two groups: a) socio-ethnic diversity and b) the writer’s gender; the diaphasic level is divided into a) textual (discursive) variety and b) type of document (register). The different combinations that result between these parameters and their divisions will help to register and to study the characteristic linguistic phenomena of Colonial Mexican Spanish.
