Las Fuerzas Armadas y la legalización del PCE

The legalization of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) marked a turning point in the transition process to democracy that began with general Franco’s death in 1975. Until this moment, the Armed Forces had tacitly supported the Government of Adolfo Suárez, favouring an orderly transition from the francoist legality to a democratic régime, and maintaining the illusion of being able to supervise the Government policies. Suárez legalized the PCE, the main enemy for the francoists in the Civil War, without a previous demand of support to the military leadership, and after just a brief explanation to the chiefs of the three military Ministries. This action produced a strong refusal by the Armed Forces and broke forever the confidence between the military officers and Adolfo Suarez’s Government. These circumstances opened up the path to the putsch operations that took place in the following years, whose objective was to dismantle or moderate the democratic system.
