Despite the fact that by the end of the 1800s an unquestionable diversity of texts written by women was produced, Uruguayan female literature was virtually inexistent.

 

As a practically unsung corpus, unrecognized even by the Academy, we shall approach to “that weave, which is hatched daily in the private scene; which plays a role in the politics and which might participate in the processes for a social transformation” (Schmukler 1990: 203) in order to travel through the works that arose instantly ahead the rise of Bourgeoisie (Masiello: 1997), considering the gender representations, given the fundamental role they play in the cultural formation of a nation.
