Originally the term “modernity” used to have a negative meaning, but in the 20th century it became considered as an equivalent to “satisfactory or efficient”. But we need ask ourselves: who have been the winners and who the victims of this process? Modernity has proposed that logic and reason will explain everything and that we should renounce intuition, but how do we explain the inequality and violence it has also produced? Many writers have dedicated themselves to answer this question and, with particular emphasis on the poetry of Manlio Argueta, the main purpose of this article is to examine how the relationship between politics and aesthetics developed in Salvadoran literature during the second half of the 20th century.
