La tesis de este trabajo es que Bolaño es fundamentalmente un moderno, aunque incorpora aspectos centrales de la posmodernidad. El carácter vanguardista de su obra temprana, a pesar de que se transforma con los años, sigue predominando sobre los descubrimientos pragmatistas de la madurez. La figura del poeta revolucionario va a derivar en la creación de un nuevo espécimen: el poeta revolucionario detective. Esta síntesis de ética (revolucionario), estética (poeta) y pensamiento científico (detective) da lugar a una obra compleja y orientada hacia el futuro.
