As has happened in the rest of the world, the Internet has changed the way information is produced and disseminated by the media in China and the way audiences contribute to the political, social and cultural debates of the country. This article explains some of the more important transformations the Internet has brought to China in the information era, describing the confirmation of commercialization and “elitization” of the news, the rise of new and influential web portals, the difficult relationship between the on-line and the off-line world and the role netizens play in criticizing the traditional media.
